April Carrillo

April Carrillo is an assistant professor of criminal justice at the University of South Dakota. Her research centers on the treatment of LGBTQ+ folks in the criminal legal system, with a focus on transgender people. As an activist and scholar, she teaches, researches and engages in LGBTQ+ community work. 

Carrillo is the vice chair of community engagement for Equality South Dakota, a volunteer organization that does advocacy work for LGBTQ+ equality in South Dakota. 

They hold a bachelor’s and a master’s in criminal justice from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. Carrillo earned their Ph.D. in criminology and criminal justice at Old Dominion University.
