We're hiring a (paid) video storyteller intern

Note: We are no longer accepting applications for this position.

About NPR Training:

The NPR Training team is a newsroom unit that supports high-quality journalism and storytelling at NPR and member stations. Public media journalists are busier than ever — and their jobs keep evolving. In this environment, it can be difficult to find the guidance and space needed to hone storytelling techniques, learn new tools and experiment. The NPR Training team exists to make all of that happen.

The unit is multi-platform, creating training opportunities on everything from audio storytelling and production, to social media and web writing. This training takes many different forms: in-person workshops, webinars, visits to member stations, conferences, events and more.

The team shares storytelling best practices and tips on its website, npr.org/training. The public site reaches a wide and growing audience. It is also a resource for those outside of public media, including journalism students, commercial news organizations and non-profits.

Video Storyteller for NPR Training

Responsibilities:

The NPR Training team currently focuses on audio and digital storytelling. The role of the Video Storyteller intern is to bring video into that mix. This is an opportunity to tread new ground and create valuable material that will reach thousands of public media journalists.

The Video Storyteller will focus on two goals.

The first is to produce training content on video storytelling, including best practices, how-to guides and more. This could take the form of a post on npr.org/training. It could be an in-person session. It could even be a video!

The second is to produce videos (and GIFs) that help journalists learn storytelling concepts and techniques. For example, what are the best — and worst — ways to use a microphone in the field?

In addition to creating videos, the Video Storyteller will work closely with our production specialist and learn how to get NPR-quality sound on every project. You may also have the opportunity to shadow our NPR Music and Facebook Live video teams.

Qualifications:

The Video Storyteller should have experience creating editorial video (including shooting and editing), with examples of finished work. Bonus points if you’ve done motion graphics, social video and produced shoots (with, you know, lights).

The NPR Training team is a multidisciplinary unit that pursues projects collaboratively. Our interns are expected to weigh in and contribute their own ideas. You should be a team player, an organized self-starter and someone who is excited to experiment with new material. Finally, you should be passionate about public media and the power of video as a medium for telling great stories.

To apply:

Please submit a resume and a cover letter that includes links to examples of video work at this link.
